I had a new wood supply of Black Walnut land this week…four beautiful pieces! These came from a huge Black Walnut tree, each piece is between 11 to 13 inches wide, 4/4 thick.
All of these have beautiful markings, color and curly designs, so pretty. These are going to make some beautiful pieces after sanded and finished.
I hope you are enjoying your weekend!!!
The Clemson Tigers won today 35 to 17 against South Carolina!!!
I was asked to make a right-handed hand mirror using Walnut. This is Part 1 of a two part post!
To start, I selected a piece of Walnut that had character and different colors. To reduce the weight I planed the Walnut to 5/8 inch thick.
I then needed to make a template to make it easier for cutting the Walnut to size and to cut the recessed mirror area. I decided to use 1/2 inch plywood for the template. The mirror will be 5 inch in diameter. Next I “rough cut” the Walnut to size but slightly larger than what I wanted the final size to be.
I marked the side of the mirror for a right-handed mirror, see my pencil marks. I applied the template to the rough cut piece of Walnut using double sided tape.
Using my router I cut the recessed area that will hold the mirror 1/8 of an inch in depth.
The Walnut is now ready for sanding.
Keeping following my post, I will post Part II, the final post soon! In Part II I will show you the sanding, applying the finish and mounting the mirror!
Have a great weekend!

This afternoon we had the most amazing sunset! Temperatures tonight are suppose to get down to 14 degrees! Last night we had 19 degrees with a wind chill of 10 degrees. I believe winter is early for nearly all of the US and there are record snow falls, temperatures and wind chills.
Stay warm! 🙂

If you love steamed oysters you would have loved our party!! We also did boiled shrimp, hot sausage, red potatoes and corn!
Everyone was on their own to open the oysters and peel the shrimp! It can be messy but it is certainly delicious! It was fun and with all the really, really cold beer it was all delicious!!
Everything was fresh, had been caught early that morning. Oysters and jumbo shrimp from the South Carolina coast. It didn’t take us very long to get all the sausage, potatoes and corn cut. Took even less time to cook once the water was boiling!
What a great evening!!
If you have never tried steaming oysters or a shrimp boil?…. it is very easy and is great for a party! 🙂 Do you like oysters and shrimp boil?
The pictures in this post I took this afternoon from our deck facing 152 degrees SE. This year we don’t have the vibrant colors we usually have because of the early freezing temperatures and snow. The leaves are more yellow, a lot of brown and of course we have the green pine tree needles.
Today our temperatures were in the mid 50’s but all of that is going to change starting tomorrow evening.
The Plains, Midwest and Rockies are already experiencing the artic cold that started in Alaska and is coming our direction. By tomorrow morning we are suppose to have cold temperature at 24 degrees and by the weekend they are predicting 20 degrees! I guess the good thing is there is no precipitation in the forecast!
What is the weather is your area? Are you getting hit by this same artic cold? Are you a fall person, winter, spring or summer?
