Blue Heron
We love to vacation at Hilton Head every summer. During our vacation I am always looking for the large blue herons, egrets and anhinga. There are alot of fresh water ponds near our condo and the heron and anhinga are always hunting for food in these ponds. I will often see a few Alligators’ in the ponds along with large turtles.

This Anhinga dove into the pond before I could get a picture but I got this picture as he was swimming across the pond. Once the Anhinga dive into the water for fish, they will sit in the sun to dry their wings and will not dive back into the pond for more fish until their wings are dry.

Our family has been visiting Hilton Head Island at least once or twice a year for over 35 years. There is a lot to do for the entire family!

Wonderful photos, Michael. We watch the pelicans fly up and down the beaches in VA and NC. I’ve never seen an Anhinga- sound quite fun to watch.
Gorgeous anhinga … maybe the best shot I’ve ever seen of one. Never seen one in person. We do have blue herons here … many of them, actually and I’ve been able to get a few pictures, but not as good as yours. I never seem to have a camera at the ready when the birds are there and giving me their good sides. These are amazing.

These are beautiful images of the Heron and Anhinga, and interesting information about the Anhinga. I’ve not seen one of those before but we have plenty of GBH and Egrets around here.

Hi Linday, thank you. I spend a lot of time during my vacation taking pictures of the blue and great heron, egrets and anhinga. Hilton Head also has bald eagles but they are very difficult to get pictures of them.

I am familiar with herons and egrets but never heard of an Anhinga – thanks for introducing them to us.
I’ve never heard of an anhinga; makes me think of a cormorant. Pretty cool.
Anhinga was really cool to watch dive into the water to catch fish.
